While Marvel’s CEO thinks female superheroes can’t be profitable, they are undoubtedly having a moment in 2015, with the announcement of projects as DC Super Hero Girls, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. CBS is now adding “Supergirl” to that line-up. The “Eye” network has picked up the series for its 2015-16 TV season. The title character, also known as “Kar Zor-El” (or Superman’s cousin) will be played by Melissa Benoist, who is known for role as Marley Rose on “Glee” and was recently seen in the Oscar-nominated film Whiplash. The show will follow Kar Zor-El at age 24 when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and begins to show the world what she’s capable of after leaving Krypton and hiding her powers. Calista Flockhart — of Ally McBeal fame — will be playing Kar’s tough boss. Supergirl will debut on CBS as soon as this fall.
