Director denies he quit Twitter over “militant feminists”

Joss Whedon, the director of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which just raked in almost $190 million at the box office in its opening weekend, abruptly deleted his Twitter account on Monday. Speculation ensued over what motivated his abrupt departure from Twitter and one theory that gained traction was that Whedon split over “militant feminists” who were dissatisfied with the depiction of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character. Whedon was so incensed by the militant feminist notion that he spoke out to BuzzFeed to shoot it down, saying it was — we’re paraphrasing here — equine dung. “Believe me,” he went on. “I have been attacked by militant feminists since I got on Twitter. That’s something I’m used to.” So if he’s totally used to being attacked by militant feminists, why’d he bolt then? “I just thought, Wait a minute, if I’m going to start writing again, I have to go to the quiet place,” he reportedly said.
