Women’s college to begin accepting transgender students

In what appears to be yet another turn in society’s ongoing shift toward broader acceptance of transgender people, Smith College, a female-only school in Massachusetts, has announced it will begin accepting transgender applicants beginning this fall. In a statement, the school’s president, Kathleen McCartney, and board chair, Elizabeth Mogar, explained the decision saying, “Concepts of female identity have evolved.” Prior to the policy shift, Smith College had only accepted women who identified as female since birth. Smith joins two other women’s colleges, Wellesley and Mount Holyoke, that have recently changed their policies toward transgender women.Read the full story at The Associated Press.
