During his remarks to the general audience on Wednesday, Pope Francis addressed the wage gap. “Why should it be taken for granted that women must earn less than men? The disparity is pure scandal,” Francis said. Although Catholic teaching has long stressed the “complementary” natures of men and women, the pontiff also focused on economic justice as an important way to save families. He added that it is an “insult” to assume that women’s rights movements are responsible for declining marriage rates. Recently, Pope Francis urged that “more authority must be given to women,” too. Perhaps he’d like to give a lesson or two to Fox News personality Stacey Dash about the gender pay gap.
