In a cringe-worthy episode of The Meredith Vieira Show that aired on Wednesday, Fox News contributor, and co-star of the 1995 film Clueless, Stacey Dash called the gender pay gap an “excuse.” “Stop making excuses. If there are opportunities, seize them,” Dash said. “If you have to be extraordinary, then be extraordinary,” she added, attempting to add a dash of women’s empowerment to her misguided diatribe, essentially saying that if you have to work harder for equal pay, then work harder. Vieira furrowed her brows and swiftly taught her a lesson. The host brought up numbers that prove that the lack of equal pay between men and women is more than just an “excuse.” A visibly uncomfortable Dash agreed that ”the numbers are true,” and awkwardly tried to turn her stance into a compliment. “Your daughter will be able to make as much money as she wants in her life, just like you are. I mean, look at you.” Vieira stood her ground, stating that she did not receive equal pay for many years, while Dash replied by saying that she “will not play victim to anything” and that “there was a law passed that we get paid equal pay.” Vieira immediately shut her down, “Except we don’t! But we don’t. We Don’t. We don’t. We don’t,” she scolded, leaving Dash feeling how we all feel about income inequality: confounded.
