There’s a colony of sex offenders living in Florida

In the latest issue of GQ, writer Jay Kirk reports on “The City of Refuge”: a colony for sex offenders, settled six-and-a-half years ago on an isolated patch of land in South Florida. People forced to publicly register as sex offenders often struggle to find jobs, and are forbidden from living within a thousand feet of a place where children might congregate–schools, playgrounds, bus stops. Kirk spent four days in “Pariahville,” where violent predators coexist with “statutory rapists” convicted, as 18- or 19-year-olds, of having sex with partners just a couple years younger.
