Two heart-wrenching photos of an unnamed mother breastfeeding her newborn son soon after her mastectomy are making sweeping rounds on the Internet. The woman was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer when she was 20 weeks pregnant, and had her left breast removed a few days later. She had to undergo chemotherapy while pregnant. According to a post on the Facebook page of the Gentle Birth Options midwife center, the new mother “really wanted to breastfeed after having many of her birth choices and preferences taken from her if only for a short time because cancer treatments resume when she is discharged from the hospital. After he was born he latched to her right breast all on his own and the room was full of emotion.” The baby, according to the same post, was born “perfectly healthy.”
