Somali woman is reinventing her country with Instagram

Somalia. The word alone conjures up grim images of slain soldiers and modern day pirates. When you’re thinking about ruthless warlords and the notorious Islamist militant group Al Shabab, it’s tough to envision vibrant, Travel + Leisure-worthy photos of local life there. One 27-year-old Somalian woman is working on changing that perception with her trusty Instagram account. Ugaaso Abukar Boocow is using the app to give her country a complete makeover. The task is fitting for Boocow, who’s an employee at the Ministry of Reconstruction and makes her living planning development that will push the country forward. “Although devastated by the war, the future of my country is very promising. We are living in an era when social media is a reliable source of information. And it’s fast! So, I’ve taken the opportunity to show the story of a human and pleasant side of Somalia,” the millennial told Le Monde. Her epic Instagram account is a refreshing oasis that features rich, colorful squares of Somali food, vivid accessories, and beaches with the bluest water. Her lush pics from paradise have helped her collect more than 75,000 followers. See why so many love her photography for yourself, and mentally sail away to Somalia. Just watch out for pirates.
