Oops, sorry

Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans apologize over sexist Black Widow joke

The promo tour for the superhero blockbuster “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” has been anything but smooth sailing thus far. First Robert Downey Jr. abruptly walked out of a cringe-inducing interview when the questions got too personal. Then, in a later interview, Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans also made headlines for all the wrong reasons, with some ill-advised comments about Black Widow. When asked whether the character, played by Scarlett Johansson, would end up in a relationship with Hawkeye and/or Captain America as some fans had speculated, Renner responded: “She’s a slut.” Evans to burst out in laughter, adding, “I was gonna say something along that line … she’s a complete whore.” The two have now both released statements to apologize for the crude attempts at humor, which are especially awkward at a time when actresses are speaking out against a culture of sexism in Hollywood. “We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize” Evans’ statement read. Jeremy Renner’s apology, however, sounded a tad more disingenuous. “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.” Try getting some more sleep next time, Jeremy.
