Robi Damelin on the shoes that are a symbol of hope for Israelis and Palestinians

By WITW Staff on April 23, 2015

Israeli Robi Damelin, the mother of a son killed by a Palestinian sniper and a spokeswoman for Parents Circle, says she is in the process of raising money to purchase 1,000 pairs of sneakers etched with doves—a universal image of peace—to be worn on International Women’s Day. “[The shoes are] a symbol of ‘walk the walk’ and ‘talk the talk,’” Damelin explained. “Women all over the world will wear these shoes and say “Why?” to conflict.

Damelin appeared with Bushra Awad, a Palestinian mother whose son was killed by an Israeli sniper, at the 2015 Women in the World Summit in New York City.
