We want men to change as many diapers as women, but they don’t always have a fair chance: Very few public men’s rooms have changing tables. On Friday, Democratic New York State Senator Brad Hoylman proposed legislation that would change that. If his bill is passed, new buildings in New York will have to install changing stations in the men’s as well as the women’s bathrooms. (Pre-existing buildings wouldn’t have to put in new changing tables, at least until they renovate their bathrooms.) Hoylman told BuzzFeed this is “about men needing to pick up the slack in parenthood,” but for Hoylman–who has a daughter with his husband–it’s “a personal issue,” too, he said. Hoylman isn’t the only one bothered by the changing-table disparity: Last month, new father Ashton Kutcher took to Twitter to complain about the lack of changing stations in men’s restrooms.
