Prepare for the feminist film event of the year! On October 23, Suffragette, a historical drama about the nascent suffragette movement will be released in US theaters. It stars Carey Mulligan as suffragette Maud and Meryl Streep as iconic activist Emmeline Pankhurst, who helped many British women gain the vote, starting in 1918. In the teaser, you hear Pankhurst telling Maud: “Never surrender, never give up the fight!” Except for very possibly getting Meryl Streep her umpteenth Oscar nomination, the film is already serving another great purpose: the release of this clip was timed with a major British campaign, #votingmatters, set up to encourage women to vote in the general election coming up in the UK. More than 9 million women failed to vote in the 2010 election, so this campaign is hoping to convince more women to register to vote before the April 20 deadline.
