Ri Sol-Ju, the wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, made her first public appearance of the year this week. Photos of the reclusive first lady and her husband were circulated by state media and showed the couple smiling and applauding as they took in a soccer game. They were out celebrating a national holiday known as the ‘Day of the Sun,” which this year is commemorating the 103rd birthday of Kim Il-Sung, Kim’s grandfather, who led the isolated nation from its establishment in 1948 until he died in 1994. Ri Sol-Ju hadn’t been seen in public since last December and has always been a mysterious figure since she began emerging in photos alongside Kim Jong-Un in 2012. She is said to have married Kim that year, and observers spotted a wedding ring on her finger during this public appearance.
