In a statement to People magazine on Tuesday, actress Rita Wilson shared some difficult personal news. Wilson said she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery last week. She thanked those close to her for their support, including her husband Tom Hanks. Wilson, 58, has been appearing in the Broadway play Fish in the Dark, but said she’s taking time off from the show to recover. She expects to return to the stage in early May. “I am recovering and, most importantly, expected to make a full recovery,” Wilson said in her statement. “Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.” Wilson credits seeking a second opinion with being crucial in the discovery of her cancer.
