Kevin Bollaert, a 27-year-old man from San Diego was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Friday, on charges of running a revenge-porn website. Bollaert posted victims’ nude photographs on his website, UGotPosted.com, along with personal information, and then charged them to have the intimate pictures removed. His website contained more than 10,000 explicit pictures — mostly women — and he’s believed to have collected around $30,000 from his victims. The publication of these pictures has caused job loss and damaged relationships among his victims, and even led to one suicide attempt. According to California’s Attorney General Kamala D. Harris, this is the first criminal prosecution of a cyber-exploitation site in the United States. “Today’s sentence makes clear there will be severe consequences for those that profit from the exploitation of victims online,” she said, sending a message to other online predators that their deplorable behavior would not go unprosecuted.
