France bans anorexic models in new health law

France’s parliament voted Friday to ban ultra-thin models, a move aimed at punishing agencies with stiff fines that employ models whose body mass indexes don’t meet a certain specification, and to foster a healthier environment overall for women working in the modeling industry. Similar laws have been enacted in Spain and Italy, but one of France’s top modeling union’s denounced the measure, arguing it would negatively impact competition among French models.
