Black women at higher risk for breast cancer

According to a report released on Monday by four major U.S. cancer groups, black women have almost twice the rate of the most aggressive form of breast cancer, triple negative, as white women. They also have the highest mortality rate from any type of breast cancer. Researchers initially believed these connections were linked to higher poverty rates, which typically delays diagnosis and treatment. “There were actually other clues that there might be some biological differences in breast cancer as well,” said Dr. Lisa Newman, an oncologist who specializes in breast cancer. Although this report is troubling, awareness is key. Black women are urged to get regular breast cancer screening tests, since early detection can save lives.
