Debrah Lee Charatan, the 58-year-old wife of alleged murderer Robert Durst, isn’t speaking to the media, but The New York Times has still managed to pull together a fascinating piece on Charatan and her relationship with Durst. Durst’s mother committed suicide when he was seven, and Charatan’s parents, Jews who lived through the Nazi invasion of Poland, passed on a “survivalist mentality” to their daughter. Durst, 71, married Charatan in a hurried ceremony in an office building in 2000, just six weeks after finding out that the police were investigating him for the disappearance of his first wife. Though they’re still married, their relationship can’t be great. Charatan is living with another man–who also happens to be one of Durst’s lawyers, and when Durst was arrested in New Orleans earlier this month, his first call was to another woman.
