They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what about ethnicity? Half-Japanese, half African-American Ariana Miyamoto is being attacked for “not being Japanese enough” to hold her new title, Miss Universe Japan. The biracial, “haafu” beauty is receiving divided reactions about her win. While some people are stating that she’s not representative of Japan’s citizens, others are championing her newfound opportunity to expand what “Japanese” can look like. Ninety-eight percent of Japan’s citizens are considered to be the same race, and unsurprisingly, Miyamoto grew up being criticized for her looks. But her win could signify changing attitudes within Japan, and make the lives of young Japanese haafus a lot easier.
