India has scrapped a Draconian law that was used to arrest people who made “offensive” Facebook posts. The nation’s Supreme Court declared that Section 66A of the Information Technology Act was unconstitutional. But few know that the petition of this law was actually filed under “Shreya Singhal versus Union of India.” Singhal was 21 years old when she filed the petition in 2012 and is overwhelmed by the historic ruling down. Describing the whole process as long and educational, her petition has changed the course of freedom of speech in India. While Singhal still has a year-and-a-half of law school to finish, she is already on the path to a lifetime of legal victories.
