The Scandal star received a standing ovation for her passionate speech at the 26th GLAAD Annual Media Awards on Saturday night, where she received the Vanguard Award for promoting equality. She called for more media representation for the LGBT community and addressed the need for marginalized communities to stick together. “Women, poor people, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, intersex people: We have been pitted against each other and made to feel like there are limited seats at the table for those of us who fall into the category of other,” she said. To prevent this from happening, she argued that Hollywood needs more inclusive representation both in front of and behind the camera; a strong and thoughtful argument for inclusion that brought the audience to its feet cheering.
