Funeral traditions broken for burial of “totally innocent” woman slain by angry mob

Mourners in Kabul, Afghanistan, are demanding justice after a 27-year-old woman was savagely killed by an angry mob last week. The woman, known only as Farkhunda, was attacked after allegedly burning the Koran. But an ensuing investigation appears to show that she did no such thing. “Farkhunda was totally innocent,” Gen. Mohammad Zahir, an official involved in the investigation in the slaying, reportedly told the press. He said 13 suspects have been arrested so far. At Farkhunda’s funeral this weekend, her coffin was carried by women — a stark break from Afghan funeral customs.
