A disturbing video emerged showing a mob of men beating a woman, setting her body on fire and throwing it into a river in the heart of Afghanistan’s capital. The woman, 27, died following the savage attack. She was accused of setting fire to pages of the Koran. Her parents, however, told the police that their daughter suffered from mental illness and did not intend to burn the book. While a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior confirmed four suspects had been arrested, human rights group are questioning whether police had done enough to stop the mob’s attack. While such vicious public attacks are unusual in Afghanistan, widespread violence against women persists and women’s rights are continuously under threat in the country.
