A 32-year-old Saudi woman was sentenced to 70 lashes after she allegedly insulted a man on the private messaging service WhatsApp. As if the barbaric punishment isn’t enough, she’ll also be forced to pay about $5,300 for damaging the man’s reputation. Although the woman admitted to insulting the man, she refuted the verdict. In a separate case, a Saudi man was allowed to divorce his wife after claiming that he received an “inappropriate” WhatsApp message from his wife when she told him that she prayed “to be patient enough to put up” with him. Although technology has been praised for helping nations progress, the Saudi Anti-Cyber Crime Law is somehow finding ways to drag people back into the past.
