France poised to ban super-skinny models

Paris Fashion Week could look very different after France’s government bans excessively thin fashion models from its runways. The country’s health minister said that the Socialist government is likely to back two amendments relating to models’ body weights. Regular weight checks and medical certificates showing a BMI of at least 18 will be required or modeling agencies and fashion houses risk fines of up to 75,000 euros and up to six months in jail, which will make hiring super skinny models a serious infraction. With an estimated 30,000-40,000 people in France suffering from anorexia, the amendments also propose penalties for any acts that could be seen as encouraging extreme thinness, like so-called “thinspo” websites that glorify unhealthy lifestyles. Hopefully this will force agents to look for models with weightier je ne sais quoi.
