An extensive study conducted in Brazil, which followed 3,500 babies among all social classes, found that those who had been breastfed for longer went on to score higher on IQ tests as adults, were more likely to earn a higher wage and have completed more schooling. According to experts, the study confirms the current advice to young mothers that they should breastfeed their babies exclusively for at least six months. However, the study also stressed that there are many different factors that contribute to a child’s intelligence, and mothers should have the choice whether or not to breastfeed. This debate isn’t over yet.
