ISIS is using Twitter to recruit women

Militants are making insidious use of social media

The extremist militant group has been successfully recruiting more young women and girls to join its ranks lately, and a new report from BuzzFeed analyzes how the group is managing to resonate with women. The effort can be traced back to Aqsa Mahmood, a 20-year-old woman who, in 2013, ran away from her family in Scotland to marry an ISIS militant. She and a close-knit group of other ISIS women essentially form a ‘sisterhood’ and use Twitter to share their stories, their versions of “the truth” and to communicate with and lure female recruits. The whole thing may sound unlikely, but it apparently is effective.
